Chapter Eleven

Gwen

I could hardly believe that he was gone. I had seen it; I could tell that his skull was completely crushed. It had been gory enough that it made me feel sick despite the rising hope in my chest. I didn’t know how to process this. Seeing him like that, I couldn’t believe that he could come back now. Not from that!

Xacov had a point about the whole Poseidon thing, after all. Edric had liked to play his mind games with me. He could have used drugs or magic to cloud my mind and make that giant of a man seem like Poseidon. My memories of the sheer power that emanated from him made me shudder to think of. That was the only thing that stopped me from thinking that they were right and there was no possible way that he had been Poseidon.

There was that lingering doubt that I couldn’t ignore, though.

All the same, as the days passed and there was no sign of Edric returning, I started to have hope. Xacov and Oliver certainly thought it was over. We kept to the forest for several days—long enough for me to forgive Xacov for putting the knife to my throat. Even though it had shocked me, I knew why he’d done it. Not to mention that if it had been a hopeless situation, I would have preferred him to end me than Edric. Xacov would have been as gentle as he could. He’d have done it quickly.

After the wolves were certain that none of Edric’s servants were following us, we finally left the forest and went into a city. There, they got us a hotel room. It was the fanciest place I’d ever stayed, with a waterslide and a hot tub on the main floor. The room had a main area attached to a kitchenette and then a loft. The downstairs had two queen beds, the loft containing a king bed. I got the loft. They even bought me new clothes.

I never thought I could feel so good wearing granny panties, but I did. After more than a week in that thong, it stank like a sewer rat and was chafing. My first shower was heavenly, and I slept for a solid thirteen hours when I first curled up in that king-sized bed.

We stayed there for several days, not talking about anything important. The hotel had a give-and-take mini library, and I grabbed a romance-murder mystery. When Xacov saw it, he laughed.

“Still into murder?” he asked with a teasing smile.

“I think I’ll be done with the true crime for a bit, but I’ve always loved mysteries. I’m not letting that bastard take it from me.” I curled up on the couch—there was a couch in the room, across from the TV. What hotel room had a couch? —and watched as Xacov and Oliver worked on a puzzle they had bought. “This seems like a gentle one to start on again.”

Oliver smiled at me. More like beamed. I felt a fluttering deep inside of me, and I turned my gaze to my book, running my fingers along the spine.
